“You cannot exaggerate about the Marines. They are convinced to the point of arrogance, that they are the most ferocious fighters on earth- and the amusing thing about it is that they are.” ____Father Kevin Keaney

Shepherd’s Men serve as ambassadors to the SHARE Military Initiative at Shepherd Center. (SHARE means Shaping Hope and Recovery Excellence) This is the only program of this type in the United States. It operates exclusively through donor funding and it provides rehabilitative care for Veterans suffering fromTraumatic Brain Injury and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The Fannin County Food Bank has recently been the beneficiary of Blue Ridge Detachment1438 of the Marine Corps League. While working at the Food Bank during last years successful Toys for Tots program, detachment members identified a need to improve the receiving area for the food bank. Deliveries were being made to a receiving door that had no suitable platform for accepting deliveries. The area was unpaved making the use of automated material moving equipment or pallet jacks impossible. Consequently, cases of donated foodstuffs and other materials had to be unloaded from delivery vehicles by hand and carried into the warehouse. A receiving ramp was designed by Marine Corps League members which has proven to solve the problem. Funding for the project was provided from the Marine Corps League Detachment treasury under its community outreach program. Materials and labor to complete the project was provided by Nathan Tipton of Tipton Concrete who graciously donated his time and equipment to complete the project. Pictured here are from left to right, Mike Nunnaly of the Marine Corps League; Sherry Morris, Executive Director of the Food Bank; Mandi Hyde, of the Food Bank; Dennis Rich of the Marine Corps League; Nathan Tipton of Tipton Concrete and Jim Holland, Jim Brumbelow and Chuck Clark of Blue Ridge Marine Corps League Chapter 1438
Blue Ridge Marine Corps League Chapter 1438 has recently provided support to the Snak in a Backpack organization here in Blue Ridge. As part of its mission statement for community outreach, members of the detachment approved a one time expenditure from its chapter budget to assist Snak in a Backpack with refurbishing newly obtained office space. League volunteers removed old wall paper; pulled up old flooring; painted walls and installed new flooring in the office space. The additional space not only allows the organizations volunteers more room to work when packing meals for Fannin County students, the additional space allows the Snak in a Backpack organization to purchase and store more food at a lower cost. For some time, food storage and food packing operations had occurred in the same space as the organizations office. Shown in this photo are Marine Corps League members Jim Brumbelow, Chuck Clark, Mike Nunnaly, Dennis Rich, Jim Holland and Greg Coffone along with Snak in a Backpack Executive Director Angela Huffstetler.
A significant number of our members are also members of the North Georgia Honor Guard. This organization provides Military Honors for veteran funerals, teaches flag protocol in local schools, and participates with other organizations in community service
